DESCRIPTION As you drive along the so-called “Highway of the Sun” in the direction of Pompeii, your driver will point out other various sites of interest such as the Abbey of Cassino. This was a monastery established by St. Benedict of Nursia around the year 529 as the source of the Benedictine Order. It was also the site of a famous battle in 1944 – this resulted from a bombing at the abbey by Allied leaders who believed that the Germans had occupied the monastery for use as an observation point. And of course you must see Mount Vesuvius, whose eruption caused the end of Pompeii almost 2,000 years ago.
