Orvieto and Assisi Day Trip
Orvieto and Assisi Day Trip
This excursion gives you the opportunity to see how present-day Italians live in a medieval hilltop town alongside almost four thousand years of history!
Visit Assisi and Orvieto in a private limo day trip from Rome
DESCRIPTION Our first stop will be Assisi, a town that plays a direct role in the story of Saint Francis, one of Italy’s two patron saints and among the most revered religious figures in the world.
St. Francis was born in 1182 into a wealthy merchant family but quickly decided to divest himself of all his wealth and live in absolute poverty. He founded the Franciscan Order and revolutionized the concept of monastic life, highlighting the importance of providing hands-on assistance to the needy. This tour features the most important places of St. Francis’ life and death: the Basilica of San Francesco (consisting of an upper and a lower church), the crucifix that came to life and spoke to him, the garden of roses without thorns and the small cave where he died. We will be sure to point out the rich decorations and details of the basilica; the walls of both the upper and lower churches tell stories of the saint’s life through paintings by some of the best artists of the 13th and 14th centuries (Giotto, Cimabue, Simone Martini, Pietro Lorenzetti).
After your visit to Assisi, we will take you on a panoramic drive through the Umbrian countryside with quaint medieval towns dotted along the way. Before long we will arrive in the picturesque town of Orvieto, home to one of Italy's finest and most impressive gothic cathedrals. The church façade of the Orvieto Cathedral is thought to be nearly perfect, and the interior provides an equally striking feast for the eyes including the “reliquiario” Christian relic containing the Shrine of Corpus Christi and Signorelli’s fresco cycle that served as inspiration for Michelangelo’s Last Judgement in the Sistine Chapel. Explore the cathedral’s hallowed halls as you learn about the art, history and miracles of its religious legends. You will also want to enjoy the town’s sweeping views of the surrounding vineyards and fields - it is one of the best panoramic points in the area.
The rest of the day can be spent curving through the town’s quaint alleys as you shop for famous Orvieto ceramics, artisanal jewelry and local food products or by simply relaxing in an outdoor café and absorbing the splendid medieval atmosphere.
