DESCRIPTION A short leisurely drive along the old Roman road of Via Tiburtina leads us to Tivoli, a famous resort destination for Romans for more than two thousand years. On the way you can observe the travertine quarries used to build numerous temples and amphitheatres such as the Colosseum, and that are still in use today!
Many villas testify to the importance of Tivoli. The most celebrated of these villas was built by the Emperor Hadrian, in which he took the opportunity to reproduce various marvels of the ancient world that he had seen during his journeys in Greece and the Far East. On this tour you will also visit the famous Villa d’Este, a beautiful private Renaissance mansion that was once the home of Cardinal Ippolito d’Este, the son of Lucrezia Borgia. Ippolito, known as “the Pope that never was”, spent a fortune creating unbelievable terraced gardens decorated with hundreds of fountains, waterfalls, ancient trees and grottoes. The gardens of Villa d’Este are considered to be one of the quintessential examples of the Italian-style garden in the world.
