DESCRIPTION
Your private English-speaking driver will await your arrival at the airport in Rome – look for him right as you exit customs. A 30-minute drive and you will be in Rome’s little-known business district, the Esposizione Universale di Roma (EUR), which was a world fair meant to take place in 1942 but that never happened because of WWII.
Your first stop will be a brief one, right outside the city walls, at the Basilica of St. Paul. This is Rome’s second-largest papal basilica after St. Peter’s, and the only one with its original architecture still intact. The basilica is most famous for its impressive series of medallions depicting each individual pope that served throughout history. The structure was built in 324 AD on the tomb of St. Paul the Apostle, and was enlarged and embellished with ornate artwork and mosaics over the centuries. Admire the basilica’s striking architecture then catch a glimpse of its adjoining rose garden and 13th-century cloister - identifiable by twin spiral columns decorated with inlaid glass mosaics in the Romanesque style.
Then, your driver will take you to another legendary landmark, the Pyramid of Cestius, that is a funerary monument from the 1st century B.C. It was built for Gaius Cestius, a distinguished magistrate thought to have served in the Roman campaigns to fight Egypt.
Rome’s majestic Palatine Hill is your next stop, where you can gaze at the Emperor’s Palace (a great photo op) and imagine what once was as you perch on the edge of Circus Maximus, the largest venue for public games and chariot races in Ancient Rome. Descend from here into the hub of the city, taking in the epic Colosseum and the sprawling Piazza Venezia right in the center. The Imperial Fora are a must-see here as well, an impressive ruin of ancient monuments lined with bronze statues of Rome’s greatest emperors.
Last but not least you will see the Trevi Fountain, the largest and most famous Baroque fountain in the entire city. You may even want to take part in the ritual of throwing coins into the water to ensure your return to Rome. When you are finally dropped off at your hotel, you will have made an impressive start to an unforgettable trip in the Eternal City.
