Early Christian Rome Tour
Early Christian Rome Tour
Very few cities have the wealth of religious monuments that you will find in Rome. St John in Lateran, the cathedral of Rome and the world, is home to the seat of the Bishop of Rome. Containing the papal throne, it is by far the most important of all the churches in the Roman Catholic Church, ranking even above St Peter’s! Your tour also includes a visit to the Lateran Baptistery, for many generations the only baptistery in Rome.
Discover the religious highlights of Rome
DESCRIPTION
Adjacent to the Basilica are the Holy Steps, believed to be the stairs leaving Pontius Pilatus’ house that Christ descended after his condemnation. The staircase leads to the Sancta Sanctorum, the holiest place in the world and first private chapel for Popes with a unique wooden painting of Christ, said to have been painted by St Luke and an angel.
Not far from there is the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, which reigns as an authentic jewel in the crown of Roman churches. Its beautiful treasures are of inestimable value and represent the Church's role as the cradle of Christian artistic civilization in Rome. For nearly sixteen centuries, St. Mary Major has held its position as a Marian shrine par excellence and has been a magnet for pilgrims coming from all over the world to experience its beauty, grandeur and holiness.
Your last stop will be the Basilica of Saint Paul, dedicated to one of the two patron saints of the city of Rome.
