For another fun indoor activity, check out one of Rome’s newest attractions called the Time Elevator Show. On board this time machine, you and your children will learn about Rome's history in a virtual reality experience packed with special effects. After seeing the virtual version, make your way to the real life Colosseum, the most famous monument in Rome where thousands of cruel fights took place among gladiators.
Continue your day in Rome with a drive to the top of Janiculum, a beautiful hill with one of the most impressive panoramic vistas of the city. Each day just before noon, Italian soldiers wheel out a howitzer on the hill’s terrace and fire a blank shot over Rome to mark the mezzogiorno (noon). Older kids can stand on the terrace directly behind the cannon for an exciting, hair-blowing effect!
After lunch, stop to taste some authentic roman gelato before heading to St Angel’s Castle, the mausoleum began by Hadrian in 128 and later transformed into a papal fortress over centuries. It is best known today as the headquarters of the Illuminati mentioned in Dan Brown’s book Angels and Demons.
Finish your day with an unforgettable climb inside St Peter’s Dome. From ground level to the top it’s a challenging (yet rewarding) 537 steps.
